The two classifications of Information System (IS) are the manual or customary framework and programmed or otherwise called Computer-Based Information System (CBIS). Before the utilization of CBIS, all the information are handled physically in a customary framework, where all the data are composed and put away in various records. Now and then, this procedure is called non-modernized framework. Non-modernized isn't effective in light of the fact that it devours a great deal of time to discover and refresh the data. To take out this issue, another framework was made which is known as mechanized framework or CBIS. Here and there the term alludes just to the associations inward site, however frequently it is a progressively broad piece of the associations PC foundation and private sites are a significant segment and point of convergence of inside correspondence and coordinated effort (King, 2002). Mr. A. T. Valdes, the bookkeeper of NPCMSTI said that the library is an instrument that is utilized to give information and data required by the understudy in his investigation by gathering books that are significant in their subjects as references. He included that from the books gathered and chose, they are kept up inâ order to be accessible to the understudies when the need it (individual correspondence, April 6, 2002). What's more, there are issues experienced in the manual or customary library arrangement of NPCMSTI based from the investigation led by the understudies of NPCMSTI. These incorporate more exertion and moderate stock of books, wasteful looking of books, wasteful age of reports, and wasteful checking of books. The library has in excess of 4000 number of books and checking every one of these books require a ton of time and exertion (Carreon, Delmendo, Maala, Mendoza Penequito, 2008). Considering the favorable circumstances brought by CBIS and the issues experienced in the current library arrangement of NPCMSTI, the scientist chose to propose an electronic library framework for NPCMSTI. Organization Background The vision of the NPCMSTI library is to be an utilitarian media place for worthy assets particularly in Nautical Science or Marine Transportation, Marine Engineering, Computer Science, Criminology, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, and Technical Vocational courses towards an amazing preparing improvement of experts, tireless sailors and gifted laborers in the network. For families who don’t understand their options, they can find themselves taking on more debt than they expected and ultimately facing an unmanageable amount of college debt. There are a lot of resources and tools online today to help students and parents get a better understanding of the financial aid process, but piecing it all together in a way that makes sense for your family can be a difficult task. Clarifi, a Philadelphia-based nonprofit, offers a financial college planning service designed to help families determine how to pay the smart way—Clarifi College. Families also receive a glimpse into the student’s life after college in a unique â€Å"post-college lifestyle consideration† that illustrates a mock budget for the student with potential student loan payments factored in. Because they are a nonprofit, their pricing is extremely affordable. The complete two-hour counseling session, including a personalized college action plan and funding plan, costs just $195. The term. # 8220 ; El-Nino, # 8221 ; which means # 8220 ; the kid, # 8221 ; was originally in mention to a warm current geting yearly during the Christmas season off the seashore of Peru and Ecuador. The term was subsequently restricted to the peculiarly strong periodic heating that disrupt the local fish and bird populations, and widen due west across the equatorial Pacific Ocean to near the day of the month line. What is an El Nino? El-Nino is the heating of the Pacific Waterss that is brought about from clip to clip by of course happening oscillations in atmospheric force per unit area and ocean motions in the equatorial Pacific. The warmer ocean pumps more energy and wet into the ambiance and this in bend alters wind and rainfall forms around the universe. The atmospheric circulation besides changes when the sea-surface temperatures in the eastern tropical Pacific rise above normal. In normal, non-El Nino conditions, the trade winds blow towards the West across the tropical Pacific. These air currents pile up warm H2O in the West Pacific, so that the sea surface is about 1/2 metre higher at Indonesia than at Ecuador. The sea surface temperature is about 8 grades C higher in the West, with cool temperatures off South America, dut to an upwelling of cold H2O from deeper degrees. This cold H2O is nutrient-rich, back uping high degrees of primary productiveness, diverse Marine ecosystems, and major piscaries. Rainfall is found in lifting air over the warmest H2O, and the E Pacific is comparatively dry. Warming of the Pacific Waterss is non the lone thing El-Nino is to be incriminations for. The current El-Nino heating has been so strong, is has added noticeable nothing to atmospheric air currents and slowed Earth # 8217 ; s spin, suggest scientists who track the planet # 8217 ; s rotary motion. El-Nino exert these profound effects by rushing up the eastbound motion of the ambiance, comparative to the solid organic structure of the planet. The alteration shows up in the analyses of the ambiance # 8217 ; s angular momentum-a belongings comparable to the impulse of a spinning tyre. # 8220 ; From mid-March through late November 1997, the angular impulse remaind significantly above norm # 8221 ; ( Monastersky 45-46 ) . During non-El Nino old ages, winds in the Torrid Zones blow from E to west, whereas air currents over the remainder of the Earth travel from West to east. Combined, they give the ambiance a net due east impulse. The ambiance routinely trades some of this impulse back and Forth with the solid Earth as air currents drag across the surface of the planet and push against the mountain ranges. In the Northern Hemisphere # 8217 ; s winter, the ambiance speeds up and Earth slows. In summer, the contrary happ ens. El-Nino besides boosts the ambiance # 8217 ; s angular impulse by decelerating down the tropical east winds and rushing the westerlies outside the Torrid Zones. As the ambiance speeds up during El Nino, earth itself slows down to conserve the combined angular impulse. John M. Gipson of NASA # 8217 ; s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. , has tracked the planet # 8217 ; s spin by supervising alterations in the length of the twenty-four hours. Over a typical twelvemonth, the twenty-four hours shortens and lengthens by approximately 1 msec, largely because of displacements in atmospheric angular impulse. During the current El Nino, the twenty-four hours has grown longer by four-tenths of a msec. Last twelvemonth, Earth squeaked past the old record high for globally averaged temperatures, go oning a barmy tendency that has made this decennary the hottest in more than a century of temperature informations. # 8220 ; All of us are pretty happy with the understanding of the different methods, # 8221 ; says Thomas R. Earth # 8217 ; s land and ocean surface last twelvemonth was 0.42 grades C heater than the long-run norm of 16.5 grades C for the mention period 1961 through 1990, says Karl. The NCDC squad analyzed informations from more than 5,000 land Stationss and from H2O temperature reading collected by satellite detectors, buoys, and ships. 1997 came in about a ten percent of a grade heater than the old record old ages, 1990 and 1995, which were virtually indistinguishable in the NCDC information. Researchers play down the differences among these three old ages because the uncertainnesss in the figures exceed the spreads between them. The of import message is that 9 of the top 10 warme st old ages on record have occurred since 1987. Such grounds adds weight to statements that worlds are changing clime in noticeable ways. It is likely that nursery emanations are playing a function in the sustained upward tendency in temperatures. El Nino helped force Earths temperature into a new district last twelvemonth by bring forthing a huge pool of warm H2O in the equatorial Pacific Ocean. Even without El Nino, nevertheless, planetary temperatures would hold remained high. During the first few months of 1997-before El Nino blossomed-the land surface was already rather warm. In contrast to the planetary form, eastern North America stayed cooler than normal last twelvemonth, as did the eastern Mediterranean and northern India. In the analysis of planetary temperatures research workers at the United Kingdom Meteorological Office in Bracknell found 1997 to be 0.43 grades C above average-the highest since they began maintaining records, in 1860. Their computations do non yet includ e December informations, but value will non alter appreciably. A 3rd survey of planetary temperatures, conducted at NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York, puts 1997 temperatures at 0.40 grades C above for the base old ages 1951-1980 ( Monastersky 45-46 ) . Although consistent with each other, these surface measurings contrast with satellite readings of Earths lower ambiance. The temperature between the land and an height of 6,000 metres last twelvemonth hovered somewhat below the mean value for the old ages 1982 through 1991. In the 19-year record of orbiter day of the month, 1997 ranked as the 8th coolest ( Science News ) . Satellite informations besides indicates that the lower ambiance has cooled over the last 19 old ages. However when you correct for the strong chilling effects of volcanic eruptions and warming effects of El Nino, the orbiter tendency turns into a heating of 0.007 grades C per decennary. The surface has warmed at twice that rate. Climate scientists are look intoing this disagreement. The two informations sets need non hold absolutely, because they measure different parts of the planet. Still, the size and continuance of the difference has raised concerns. It is extremely improbable that the ambiance and surface could act independently for so long. Last twelvemonth, a term of research workers reported happening grounds of jobs that unnaturally lowered the orbiter temperature measurings, but at the same clip these satellite readings agree about absolutely with balloon readings. The present El Nino is the strongest observed in the latter half of the 1900 # 8217 ; s, during which the mo st sophisticated measurings have been taken. It may really good be the strongest of the century. This El Nino has besides become strong earlier in the twelvemonth than most others have. The last clip conditions looked like this was when the strongest, most destructive El Nino on record struck in 1982-1983. By the clip that event subsided, some 2,000 people died in implosion therapy, clay slides, drouths, fires and assorted related catastrophes, hundred of 1000s were forced out of their places, and economic losingss topped $ 8 billion in the United States. This twelvemonth s version of El Nino lived up to its outlooks that had been predicted. There are non any exact sums as of yet, but we have already seen the devastation it has caused the United States and the universe every bit good. There were the mudslides in California, which stranded civilians and vacationists in their places, which forced the National Guard to come and airlift them to safety, before they became a lasting porti on of the landscape. Here in Iowa, we recorded the 2nd warmest winter on record, at an mean temperature of 36 grades C. In the southern provinces they recorded record sums of snowfall. One winter storm dropped more snow in Kentucky and Tennessee than we saw here in Iowa throughout the whole winter. Towns and metropoliss throughout the universe have been ravished by El Nino # 8217 ; s wrath and the worst of it could still be to come. The bottom line is the possible for unsafe conditions is still a major menace for our approaching 1998 spring and summer season, merely as we saw during the 1997-1998 winter effects of El Nino, and so people ought to be prepared. However, that the possible exists for any given location during any given season or twelvemonth, whether during an El Nino or non, and people should educate themselves on an on-going footing about ways to minimise weather-related menaces to their life and belongings. We live on a planet where at any given clip catastrophe can s trike whether predicted or non, so be prepared for nature # 8217 ; s wrath!

Macroeconomic Analysis of Germany Essay Example

Macroeconomic Analysis of Germany Essay Its goal was to boost the relatively low economy by stimulating people to spend and consume. However, due to a general Insecurity in the population and the peoples lack of confidence, consumption failed to amplify, as hoped, despite the Increase in disposable income. In addition, despite the Reform, after its implementation, investment also slightly decreased. The lowering of the interest rates by 275 basis points in 2001 increased the money supply and led to a higher consumption, which positively reflected on the GAP growth. However, the lower Interest rates were not able to accelerate Investment and employment. Nevertheless, the Euro appreciated against the US Dollar, which In turn ad a positive influence, as exports and imports maintained their growth. After continuous depreciation of the Euro against the Dollar, up until its all-time low at the end of October 2000, the CB, along with the US and Japanese monetary authorities, intervened and increased the interest rates twice, both by 0,25%. By doing so they could first avoid a threat of an Increase of domestic prices due to inflation and also augment Imports due to the appreciation of the Euro. Furthermore, the skyrocketed foreign direct Investment In 2000 was reduced by 182. 52 billion Euros In 2001 The opening of a single market in 1 993 had an overall positive influence on the German economy, especially in the trade sector, where exports increased by 10,6% until 2002, totaling 660,6 billion Euros. The eNotes Blog Prose, Poetry, and Macaroni Seattles Lit Crawl2016

Prose, Poetry, and Macaroni Seattles Lit Crawl2016 Lit Crawl is Seattle, WAs biggest and baddest annual event of poetry and prose readings. With 15 venues, 35 readings, and 5 phases, Lit Crawl is a massive uplift of local voices and art, as well as the perfect niche for a literary nerd. We  went to the first four  phases, and were blown away by the showcase of talent. In case you missed live documenting the event on our Instagram,  weve recapped some highlights. First up  was the Poetry Northwest  reading in downtown Seattle at a place called Folio: The Seattle Athenaeum. Folio is housed in the same building as the YMCA Central Branch Building; as poet Jane Wong mentioned, you could smell the chlorine of the YMCA pool from the small library we were in. This aquatic touch was fitting, because the president of the Seattle Cephalopod Appreciation Society and my former professor, Sierra Nelson, read first. Then Megan Snyder-Camp read her nature-filled prose poetry, followed by a reading by Jane Wong, author of the poetry collection Over Pour. We hopped on the light rail  and made our  way over for  Phase 2 at  the next venue, Vermillion- a bar that doubles as an arcade and art gallery (score!). This reading was hosted by Natasha Marin, creator of the Reparations Project, which encourages white people to support people of color in their communities. This reading featured a number of emotionally provocative, local poets, including Robert Lashley, Imani Sims, Anastacia Renee, Quenton Baker, Sakara Remmu, and Andy Yun. Even though the room was PACKED (most audience members could barely see the performers) their voices were powerful enough to keep the audience  engaged. The performers focused a lot on themes of being a person of color  in American systems and breaking down white fragility and guilt. Jessica Mooney, Neal Thompson  (top); Jean Burnet, Jeanine Walker  (bottom) For Phase 3 we  walked a block away to the Cheap Beer and Prose series of Lit Crawl. Cheap Beer and Prose is often done at Hugo House, but this time it was held at the Velocity DanceCenter. Jean Burnet, Jessica Mooney, and Neal Thompson, read from their short story collections and memoirs  while the hilarious Jeanine Walker hosted. For the final phase (for us) we went back to Vermillion Art Gallery and Bar and saw Steph Kesey present her series Hey There, Macaroni to an audience for the first time. The series went through the phases of love and rejection by means of animated  macaroni GIFs. It was an eye-opening and genuine collection that was originally meant as an act of love for her close  friend’s experiences with love and loss. Kesey plans to drop her  macaroni GIFs for the whole world to enjoy on January 1  (follow her progress on Instagram). Did you attend this years Seattle Lit Crawl? Wed love to hear your experiences in the comments below!

Law and Intellectual Property Memorandum Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words - 1

Law and Intellectual Property Memorandum - Essay Example Yes, Mr. Kenobi is entitled to a fair royalty from Jedi and he also could seek a court injunction requiring his pictures to be removed from Jedi’s website until the royalty is received. Since i) Mr. Kenobi can prove that the pictures are his and ii) Jedi did digitally copy the pictures intentionally by deliberately uploading them onto Emperor’s server, this constitutes primary infringement. No, Mr. Kenobi is not entitled to any damages or royalties from Emperor. Since Empire is only providing a hosting service for Jedi’s website, Emperor did not directly nor intentionally copy the pictures, it simply received a copy of the pictures from Jedi through the rendering of a hosting service. This only constitutes secondary infringement and there was no intent to copy. Probably, Empire is liable to Jedi for the fair market value of the secret formula, unless specific damages had been outlined in the contract between them. Since Empire did not copy the information directly, it does not constitute primary infringement. Although it did inadvertently provide the means for others to do so, Empire did not have any intention of copying, therefore it does not constitute secondary infringement either. However, the data was explicitly labeled as confidential by Jedi and Empire was negligent in protecting the confidentiality of the data. Yes, Jedi is entitled to a fair royalty from its competitors for use of their unregistered design right and could also seek a court injunction to not only prevent the further illegal use of their secret formula but also have all products where their secret formula was illegally used recalled until the royalty is received. This office is considering possible liability between Jedi, Emperor, and Mr. Kenobi. Jedi has posted on its website (hosted by Empire) pictures reputed to belong to Mr. Kenobi.  Ã‚

Entrepreneurship and Innovation Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words - 1

Entrepreneurship and Innovation - Essay Example (comscore.com/press_events). There has been a surge in smart phone ownership, with growth particularly strong over the last year, up by 81 per cent from 7.2 million users in May 2009 to 12.8 million in May 2010. In June 2010, over a quarter of people in the UK (26.5 per cent) said they had a smart phone; more than double the number two years previously (media.ofcom.org.uk). This data can be used to imply that the Smart Phone would have wide acceptability in the market. One of the important assumptions which we can make here is that the growth in the market will make smart phone more affordable majority of people in the United Kingdom, their proliferation will increase and also lead to a surge in the contents of the mobile and data consumption. A new report regarding the geography of smart phones indicates that the shipment of smart phones in the first quarter of the year was 55.2 million with the growth hitting 67% year-on-year. (microscope.co.uk). It is assumed further that it provi des a substantial opportunity for different people in the mobile ecosystem – from operators and manufacturers to publishers and advertisers – who adapt to this dynamic market. ... On 7th May, 2009, a long-awaited recommendation on the mobile termination rates to reduce termination charges was adapted by EU by the end of 2012. (berr.gov.uk). On 1st April, 2010, a statement with a further consultation was issued to the mobile number porting process in which the porting time took one day (berr.gov.uk). The standard Value Added Tax rate is 17.5%, however, it will be increased to 20% in January 2011 (hmrc.gov.uk). The call tariffs indicate that calls may be charged by any residential or business package selected as the Charge Costing Package (telecom-tarriffs.co.uk). This implies that the market for mobile phone users is likely to be damaged as the call rates may rise because of the increases in tariffs mentioned above. Apart from that, the mobile operator companies are likely to introduce new packages to attract more consumers. This would directly have an impact on Vertigo as the demand for cell phones would rise pertaining to offers and packages introduced by Ope rators (Gruber, 2005). PART B 1. Financial Budget and Forecast for 3 year (Apple iphone; Assumed) The sales forecast is assumed on the basis of iPhone units sold by Apple in the past year when it was launched. As reported by O2, Vodaphone, Tesco and Apple’s management, iPhones were set to reach 2.5 million units. Furthermore, 10.7 million units were sold throughout Europe and 11 million units are expected to be sold in the year 2010 therefore, these figures are assumed to be the UK’s share in the latter. (ipodrepublic.com; Wordpress.com). Prices are kept constant however; they are adjusted with an expected inflation rate of 4%. The Annexure at the end of this

Receiving a Scholarship Essay Example for Free

Receiving a Scholarship Essay The Great Being saith and I quote: â€Å"Regard man as a mine rich in gems of inestimable value. Education can, alone, cause it to reveal its treasures, and enable mankind to benefit therefrom†.   Madam Chairperson, Members and Officers of The Grand Bahama American Womens Club, ladies and gentlemen, students, good evening. It is an honor and with great humility I stand before you today, to encourage those candidates selected that will go forward and to thank those that assisted me in the past from this fine club. SCHOLARSHIP is defined as a â€Å"commitment to learning.† Scholarship is NOT an inherited quality, but one that is acquired and developed as a result of responsibility, diligence, and dedication. A scholar is willing to spend hours in reading and study, knowing the lasting benefits of a cultured and educated mind. From the detailed works of Aristotle, to Shakespeare and Darwin, the information and the wisdom available to students today is absolutely priceless. Candidates, I once sat where you are. Let me take you back on my journey, in hopes that it will encourage and motivate you to remain focused on the endeavour that you are about to embark upon. I received the Scholarship for the school year commencing September, 1993. I was advised at the time that the scholarship was for one school year, but with good grades, that year could turn into another year. So, I made the commitment first to God and then to myself to succeed, and with hard work, dedication and determination I was able to achieve the grades, earning the scholarship for five years up to my graduation in 1997. The scholarship allowed me to attend Freeport Anglican High School the now Bishop Michael Eldon School, where I received a quality education in an environment conducive to learning, and a foundation that prepared me for studies beyond High School. This scholarship was not only an opportunity for my fees to be funded by persons other than my parents but an opportunity to realize that if a group of individuals actually believed in my success, then I too must also realize my potential and believe in me. But let me also confess that at times I got frustrated and overwhelmed and just didn’t feel like studying or reading, and so that mischevious child within would surface. I remember one year a few weeks before exams I went home and told my mother that the grading system at school had changed and if you got a F on your report card it meant  FANTASTIC, E meant EXCELLENT, D meant DISTINCTION C meant CREDIT B meant BAD and A meant AWFUL. Well, based on that piercing stare I got from my mother, I immediately studied as I should and made the grade. So I encourage you the recipients, to unlock your potential and make the most of your talents for the future. So many of us dare to dream of where we will see ourselves in a certain amount of years, what we dream to become, and what career path we desire to pursue. Be assured that education alone can unlock, unravel, and ensure that all dreams, desires and aspirations are achieved and materialized. Remember it was Norman Vincent Peal that said â€Å"what ever the mind can conceive and believe it can achieve.† Dreams are the stepping stones to the future, it will open the doors of opportunity allowing you to utilize your full potential. Dreams will ignite in you the spirit of persistency. Nothing in this world can take the place of Persistency. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talents. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistency and determination alone are omnipotent. An honor such as this is a wonderful way to recognize and celebrate the choices, and sometimes the sacrifices, you have made. But I believe that what should make you and your parents the most proud is not the actual honor itself, but what you had to do to get it. As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, The reward of a thing well done is to have done it. However, do not rest on your laurels alone, but continue to strive towards even loftier goals. Your achievements embody a positive attitude backed by purpose. The only way to achieve your purpose is to take small actions everyday. In the end, they all add up. Scholarship is much more than just getting straight As. It is a life-long love of learning. In the end it is a sum of small choices. Each time you decide you WANT to learn something, the experience will be so rewarding that the next time becomes easier. Soon, learning becomes a habit. At that point, your desire to learn makes getting As easier while taking the focus off the grades. The knowledge can still be hard to gain, but knowing youve mastered a difficult subject is an awesome reward. Suddenly the world around you becomes richer and full of learning opportunities. You are being given an opportunity. Opportunities are only meaningful if people have the capabilities, the resources, the aspirations to make the most of them. Aspiration matters in every aspect of education:  the aspirations of parents for their children from their very earliest years; the aspirations of young people, whether they are going to seize the opportunities available to them; the aspirations of course of teachers, of schools, of local government setting high expectations for achievement; the aspirations of society placing the highest possible cultural value upon learning itself; and of course aspirations of government that sets long term ambitions and mat ches those ambitions with the necessary investment over the long term to realise them. In a world where violence and hatred seems to be taking over, I quote â€Å"Man is the supreme Talisman. Lack of a proper education hath, however, deprived him of that which he doth inherently possess† end quote. Many children are exposed to violence in their communities, in their families, and in the media. Exposure to violence crosses socioeconomic and cultural boundaries, occurring in all groups within our society, and this exposure to violence can have significant effects on children during their development. The most important protective resource to enable a child to cope with exposure to violence is a strong relationship with a competent, caring, positive adult, most often a parent. But with the support of good parenting by either a parent or other significant adult, a child’s cognitive and social development can proceed positively even with adversity. Violence is in our communities, but ensuring that our children are equipped with and education that enables them to determine right from wrong, then we are one step closer to finding a solution. Families, regardless of their composition, are uniquely structured to provide the attention, nurturing, and safety that children need to grow and develop. So candidates you have an opportunity to become the solution to this crumbling civilization around us. Through your education, you will look upon your environment, your community and your country with new eyes and new vision. To not take advantage of this opportunity that has been afforded to you, as you have been hand picked out a selection of many qualified applicants. Take this opportunity to push yourself even harder than before. To excel further in all subjects, to be an example to all your classmates. Knowing that the strategic choices that you make today are going to be critical for your long term prosperity. Make the American Women’s Club proud  of the selection made here today. Make learning your life, and success your destination. At this time I would like to say a special thanks to The Grand Bahama American Women’s Club, a club that fosters pioneering initiatives to encourage local young people to think about education and higher learning and for extending such an opportunity to me, an opportunity that honestly, â€Å"thank you† doesn’t really convey how appreciative and grateful I am for having been given the opportunity extended to me by this Club. Once again candidates, I close in saying and I quote â€Å"To strive, to persevere, ensures ultimate and complete victory† end quote. And remember as Mother Teresa said, Life is a promise; fulfill it. Thank you all very much.

Various Essays On Goldings Lord Of The Flies -- essays research pape

1. Given that Piggy represents society and its rules, he must have found his situation on the island disturbing at the least. At first, there is no organized social structure of any kind; no position of leadership existed. There was an absence of rules. This must have been very disturbing to Piggy. Then, as the story progresses, a sort of chain of leadership emerges with Ralph being voted as â€Å"chief.† â€Å"Ralph raised his hand for silence. ‘All right. Who wants Jack for chief?’ With dreary obedience the choir raised their hands. ‘Who wants me?’ Every hand outside the choir except Piggy’s was raised immediately. Then, Piggy too, raised his hand grudgingly into the air. Ralph counted. ‘I’m chief then.’†(LoF p21). Then, a little bit later, Ralph brings up the idea of rules: â€Å"Jack was on his feet. ‘We’ll have rules!’ he cried excitedly. Lots of rules! Then when anyone breaks them-’à ¢â‚¬ (LoF p33). When the â€Å"hunters† kill their first pig is when we start to see signs of a more primal society, or lack thereof. They repeat the chant, â€Å"Kill the pig. Cut her throat. Spill her blood.† Piggy obviously if fed up with Jack and his hunters, asking, â€Å"What are we? Humans? Or animals? Or savages? What’s grownups going to think?’†(LoF p.91). And then, Ralph’s authority is challenged by Jack. Jack first disregards the rule of letting the person with conch speak without interruption. Then he directly challenges Ralph, saying, â€Å"And you shut up! Who are you, anyway? Sitting there, telling people what to do. You can’t hunt, you can’t sing-’†(LoF p91). From this confrontation is goes downhill on the island. On pg. 114, a â€Å"game† gets a little out of hand, when Robert pretends to be the pig, and the others pretend to hunt him, but then they become more serious and actually hurt hi m. He is not killed, however. Eventually, Jack and some of the other boys split apart from Ralph and his â€Å"group.† Jack and his hunting band kill another pig savagely, reveling in its agony. The â€Å"peak of their decline† was when they killed Simon, calling him a beast, during the storm. Then Piggy is killed, and the conch is shattered, and that is when I consider them to be at the absolute lowest in society: nothing more than savages.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  2. In the novel, Sam and Eric are introduced early as two separate people, beings, that resemble one entity. â€Å"Even while he blew, Ralph noticed the last pai... ... stood on the sand, looking down at Ralph in wary astonishment.†(LoF p200). The attire of the boys and the officer also stand in stark contrast. The officer is dressed with a military neatness, with a clean, decorated uniform, most likely clean, shaved, etc. The boys, however are in need of hair cuts, most of them are covered with clay, and they’re probably wearing the tattered remains of shorts or pants. Despite how much more â€Å"civilized† the officer must look than the children, an irony remains. This officer represents adult life, responsible, capable, but really bearing the same prospect for evil as the â€Å"savages†. This officer, who interrupted a manhunt, is going to rescue the children and take them off of the island, but to where? To a cruiser that will soon be hunting its enemy in the sam way as the savages hunted Ralph. To me, the irony is that although the officer and his cruiser seem to be so much more civilized than these little savage s, he isn’t. It’s just like what â€Å"the Beast† told Simon. No matter where you go, you can’t get away from him. Because this â€Å"Beast†, this capability for evil, exists in everyone.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚     Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚

A Meeting of Giants

Imagine that you are a participant in a panel discussion with Sigmund Freud, Carl Rogers, Albert Bandura, and Albert Ellis. The discussion is facilitated by a moderator who asks questions for each of you to answer according to your different theories of personality development and change. How would you and each of the other four panel members answer the following questions? (Note: Construct the answers for the other panel members based on your understanding of their theories. Your own answers will reflect your personal opinions and beliefs, and may include â€Å"bits and pieces† of other theories). The panel was finally assembled on that wet cold day in December.   I was feeling a bit sheepish to be in the company of such great scholars.   Sigmund Freud, Carl Rogers, Albert Bandura, and Albert Ellis were mighty powerful company for me to lock wits with.   However, I believed that my opinion was just as important and plausible as there own.   I was just reaching for my wa ter glass when the moderator called us to order and begin immediately with the first question.Question 1How would you explain the differences in persons regarding their reactions to authority? Why do some persons appear to follow all the rules of others, while other persons appear intent on living by their own sets of rules?Dr. Freud:The human being is essentially a sophisticated energy system.   That energy is channeled, flows, or is blocked by a number or different behaviors.   The goal of all these behaviors is of course pleasure.   Energy will always find the path of least resistance that leads to pleasure. When this energy is constrained or rerouted by societal demands, such as rules and taboos, that energy must be vented in some way.   Some individuals are more apt at releasing this energy in a positive manner, while others are more confounded by it.Some individuals forfeit there pursuit of pleasure and lead guilt ridden and often miserable lives although they appear to be socially compliant.   Others allow their natural propensity to pursue pleasure to guide their lives and are normally much happier, although society may feel they are living by their own rules.Dr. Rogers:I beg to disagree with what my colleague Dr. Freud has stated.   His theories are often rooted in sexual drives and motivations.   However, the greatest human drive is the single goal towards self-actualization.   It is not necessary to postulate on which particular pleasure principle an individual is seeking to understand why they buck authority. Those individuals that resist authority have simply grown from a less complex being into a more complex one.   The less complex we are, the more authority we may feel we need.As an individual matures and develops, they become more complex and may seek to break the bond of authority for a greater life experience.   Those who go along with the status quo perhaps see their lives in the light that they have achieved what they can and there is no need to push further.   We all simply seek to maintain and improve who we believe we are and the live experience in general. (Pervin, Cervon, & Oliver, 2005)Dr. Bandura:Self-efficacy has a great affect in self-development, perseverance in the face of resistance, resilience to trauma, and decision choices at crucial junctures in life.  Ã‚   The rejection of authority is no greater than it is seen among adolescents and young adults. The ability to control and regulate self-efficacy is core to the ability to self-manage ones motivations, desires, and responses.   Beliefs of personal efficacy are what cause an individual to adopt certain self regulatory standards (Bandura, Caprara, Barbaranelli, Gerbino, & Pastorelli, 2003) If a person believes that they are useful in society they are apt to be more law abiding and compliant of authority (Bandura et al., 2003).   When other individuals feel as if their self-worth is low they are less likely to respect authority a nd will live as they see fit because of their standing in society. (Pervin et al., 2005)Dr. Ellis:Self-evaluation leads to depression and repression, and avoidance of change.   The best thing for human health is that we should stop evaluating ourselves altogether.   There is often concern for individuals because of their self image and societal pressures. These two are more likely to be in agreement than in conflict.   The key is to see behaviors for what they are.   Is there anyone who likes authority?   Of course not we all have some disagreement with being told what to do by someone else.   However true this may be it is not the authority that causes problems for most individuals it is the irrational beliefs that adherence or rejection of this authority will lead to some dire consequence. This in itself may cause individuals to have one reaction or the other to the rule makers.   Some may choose total compliance in hopes that life remains stable, or what appears to be total anarchy and disrespect for any authority because it has no affect.

The True Behavior Of Violent Video Game Players - 1305 Words

Austin Schuster Composition Critical Thinking February 24, 2015 The True Behavior of Violent Video Game Players In October 1958, a Physicist named William Higinbotham successfully created the first interactive computer software purely for entertainment; a simple idea of two panels bouncing a dot between one another. This was later rebranded as the famous title Pong, the original that Higinbotham created was generated on an oscilloscope, which is a small computer designed to test electrical equipment. Today, video games are huge in terms of consumer acceptance, marketing, and digital file size. Video games are designed to be a fourth form of entertainment, joining books, movies, and television shows. However, the content has certainly always been changing within any given video game title; a larger, more recent genre known as first-person-shooters (FPS) or specific role-playing-games (RPGs), these types of video games are developed and rated by global software rating companies, worrying some consumers that most mature-themed video games will creat e violent behavior in a player. This speculation of violent video games affecting a person’s everyday behavior negatively is incorrect and ironically childish over a simple form of time consumption. There are many types of video games, such as classic platformers we all know like Super Mario Bros., Japanese side-scrolling shoot-em-ups (Opa-Opa), fantasy RPGs (Final Fantasy), recent addition of FPS like Destiny, and many more.Show MoreRelatedSociety’s Most Recent Scapegoat: Video Gaming1637 Words   |  7 Pages Rebellious, violent behavior in youth is often treated simplistically – whether Elvis Presley’s latest hits, the programs airing on Saturday night television, or the newest film playing in theaters were popular amongst children and young adults, the blame for unfavorable behavior has always had its scapegoat.
